NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY (NJHS)
Rio Norte Junior High School is proud to be an affiliated chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. The purpose of NJHS is to create enthusiasm for scholarship; to stimulate a desire to render service; to promote leadership; to encourage responsible citizenship; and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.
Membership in the Rio Norte JHS Chapter is open to all students who meet the membership criteria in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship.

Rio Norte NJHS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: When does NJHS start?
A: In order to qualify for NJHS, students have to meet the requirement of a minimum of a 3.7 cumulative GPA. Applications for membership will start after quarter 1 grades have been finalized to let students know if their grades are applicable for Rio’s NJHS requirements. This happens usually during Mid October, the end Q1 grading period can be found on the school or district website, and in students binder reminders.
A: Rio Norte’s NJHS chapter is a year long club. Applications for both 7th & 8th grade happen after the end Q1 and applications are accepted for 2 weeks. Announcements are are on Rio TV and are on the NJHS website after Q1.
Q: How does my student qualify for NJHS
A: In order to qualify for NJHS a student must do the following:
- Have a 3.7 or above cumulative G.P.A. through Quarter 3
- Complete 10 community service hours for a non-profit organization
- Maintain good behavior and citizenship
Q: When will I be notified of qualification?
A: Students will be notified by email on their acceptance status within the week after applications are due.
Q: What are considered to be acceptable community service hours?
A: All hours must be for a NON-PROFIT organization. students may not volunteer at a relative's or friend's business, or double dip with counting it twice for another club and NJHS. Please use our NJHS website for more information and a list of what is and is not acceptable and for suggestions. Remember though, being an NJHS student it is your responsibility to find community service opportunities that meet the requirements.
Q: How soon can I start my community service hours and where can I get the paperwork needed to sign-off my hours?
A: Returning 8th grade members ONLY can count hours starting in June. New 7 & 8 th grade members may count hours starting in November once membership has been stated. The service hours verification sheet will be in our google classroom which the code will be given in our first meeting. However, if you’d like to get a head start you can also get the paperwork from Mrs James (Rm. D11).
Q: Is there a fee to participate?
A: There is no required fee. However, we are kindly requesting a donation of $10 to cover the cost of the certificates, membership cards, medals, and refreshments that are awarded at the end of the year induction ceremony.
